Johannes Salo might very well be Finland's answer to Dream Theater’s Jordan Rudess. In fact, the band borrows enough from great progressive bands that you have to admire them for that very reason. At least at times. The problem with For Giving, For Getting, though, is that for all the cool parts present here, there’s no real whole, no songs that make you sit up, take notice and say, “Now, that’s a great story/that’s a great piece of music.” There are tiny threads of greatness, of course, but a larger piece eludes this collective. In the end, Elenium show promise. Perhaps with a little time they’ll come to the fore and really begin to shred.
